Fiore dei Liberi: Flos Duellatorum

1.0 Abrazare - Magistro Due (Master #2) - Counters

(1.2.6) Gioco 2.1:  shoulder hook takedown (agent) => elbow push (counter)

"Le man al uolto si t'ò ben poste,
Che de altre prese ti faro le mostre."

"The upturned hand is a good position,
Which the other grip I play you as shown."

Interpretation/Notes: The translation of the second line of the verses has a low translation confidence. It is clear from the illustration, Liberi certainly makes references to the upturned hand which is used to push up the agent's elbow and therefore, release his grip on the patient agent's face. Meanwhile, the second verse eludes to the "other grip" or "other press" which is assumed to the left hand of the patient agent, which is used to facilitate the break away from the agent's grip.

Application: This illustration begins the master #2 series of counters in which this illustration depicts a counter to the previous illustration Gioco 1.5.

In the previous play, the patient agent (wearing the garter) grabs the agent's chin/face while positioning his right leg behind the agent's left leg with a followup of a posta longa for the take down. However, in this illustration, the agent now the master (master #2 wearing the leg garter) demonstrates a counter to the face/chin grab by pushing up on the attacking elbow causing the grip to loosen from the face and continuing with the elbow push up and over the head and downwards behind causing the agent to torque the body and twist and fall down. Although the grips are reversed, whereby the intial face grab is with the agent's right hand, this illustration depicts the face grab with the left hand. It is possible that this illustrative creativity was such that the positioning of the hands would be depicted with greater clarity.
