A portrait of Camillo Agrippa found in his treatise
Camillo Agrippa was a noted fencer, architect, engineer and mathematician of the Renaissance. He is considered to be one of the greatest fencing theorists of all time. He is most renowned for applying geometric theory to solve problems in armed combat who also simplified Marozzo's eleven guards to four. He was regarded as the man who defined rapier as a thrusting weapon as well as one to be used for cutting. He published his book "Trattato di Scienza d'Arme. Et un dialogo in detta materia." in 1553, later re-published in 1604.

The 1604 edition was published in Venice by R. Meglietti, 4to. Contemp. limp vellum. with engraved title incorporating a portrait of the author in rich allegorical borders, 9 double-pages, 1 full-page, and 33 half-pages of engravings by Giulio Fontana.

Agrippa was a contemporary of Michelangelo, and the two were probably acquainted (or so Agrippa claims in his later treatise on transporting the obelisk to the Piazza San Pietro).
