Sharp Sword Cutting Exercises

January 5, 2003

Periodically, AEMMA's students are offered the opportunity to swing a sharpened sword, and strike a target composed of tightly rolled and wet tatami mats (a grass-straw mat), inserted vertically onto a wooden spike [ 1 ]. This exercise is very useful in demonstrating the importance of delivering a properly angled cut, because should the true edge be off, one will simply knock down the target rather than nicely slicing it in two.

The presentation below are a series of film clips in Quicktime format of a number of individuals attempting their cut. Each video is highlighted with the individual's name.
