Guelph School of Japanese Sword Arts 2000

July 19 - 24, 2000

On Saturday the 22 of July David and Brian of AEMMA attended the Guelph School of Japanese Sword Arts 2000 display portion of the weekend long event. Kim Taylor, the event organizer and host invited AEMMA to provide a demonstration of training and sparring techniques. This was the first year in the 10 year history of the event that any Western Martial Arts of any kind have been presented. Other demonstrations included Japanese long bow shooting rituals along with quite a number of ritualized sword drawing\attack techniques. There was also a display of rice mat cutting. In addition some kendo sparring and Naginata Kata and sparring was presented. The AEMMA demonstration consisted of a brief introduction to our mission and a description of our research and training methods. A short demonstration of full armoured "fechting o'plesaunce" (demonstration fighting with no thrusting) was provided along with some slow speed demonstrations of both halfsword methods and simple grappling. Following was a short question and answer period. We were well received and many people expressed their interest and appreciation for our work to date. Quite a number of the participants and observers clearly indicated that they fully support our goals and mission and believe that we are on the right track to achieving them. We have been invited back for next years's event.
