Royal Ontario Museum, ROM The Royal Ontario Museum was formally created by the signing of the ROM Act in the Ontario Legislature on April 16, 1912. When the Duke of Connaught, then Governor-General of Canada, opened the new building to the public at 3:00 pm on March 19, 1914, it instantly became an object of pride for Toronto. The museum has grown it collections to almost six million artifacts, and welcomes between 750,000 to a million visitors annually.
Lord of Wrentnall and the Great Lyth Robbie Sprules is a founding partner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Taylor|Sprules Corporation. He has over 28 years experience in: regional, national and international product brand development; product brand architecture; intellectual property creation and management; total corporate brand development, integration and application; product, service and corporate name creation, registration and asset development; complete strategic linked-brand program development; industrial design and applied research; strategic marketing counsel. Mr. Sprules holds the British titles Lord of Wrentnall and Lord of Great Lyth, hereditary Lordships in the western shires of England. He is an Officer of the Honourable Guard, 78th Fraser Highlanders, York Garrison, and a Director of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada. King of Arms
Frank T. Williams, Free Scholler, AEMMA Frank holds the position of Director in the executive of AEMMA, and is also one of the instructors. Frank, due to his commitment, dedication and training successfully played for the prize of free scholler rank on April 17, 2005. Currently, Frank is the principal instructor for the "Introduction to Medieval Swordsmanship" course offered by the Royal Ontario Museum's ROMLife program. He is also the AEMMA medieval longbow training coordinator.
The Heralds
Dr. Robert Mason, Dept of World Cultures, ROM (Defendants) Dr. Robert Mason is an archaeologist in the Royal Ontario Museum's (ROM) Near Eastern and Asian Civilizations collection and is co-founder of the Friends of the Medieval Studies Society of the ROM. Robert's research interests cover ancient technology, trade and industry from the beginnings of time to the industrial revolution. Although his research covers the globe, his current field work is in Syria, where he studies high-technology pottery and castles of the mediaeval period. He received a doctorate in archaeological science from the University of Oxford, and a B.A in anthropology and geology from the University of Toronto. Robert is also cross-appointed to the University of Toronto.
Captain David E. Rumball, CD, UE, LRHSC (Appellants) Captain David E. Rumball had served with the 7 Toronto Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery and rose to command the 130 (Headquarters) Battery. David is descended from four United Empire Loyalists and four Loyalist coronets appear in the achievement. Captain Rumball was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) and it is shown pendent from the arms. David is also the second Vice President of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada. Matt Dreger, scholler, AEMMA (Defendants)
Matt Dreger is a Scholler and has been studying Western Martial Arts with AEMMA for two years. He briefly studied Asian martial arts and is a competitive target shooter. He has a lifelong passion for history and literature, which he nurtured with a degree from UofT in Literary Studies, History and Philosophy. His career, however, took him towards IT, where he has been a programmer, web developer and writer for the last decade.
Aaron Bolarinho, recruit, AEMMA (Appellants)
Aaron Bolarinho started training with AEMMA 3 years ago in his senior year of High School. He attended Guelph chapter of AEMMA for his first two years while he lived in Kitchener, Ontario. Upon being accepted at the University of Toronto for the Fall 2007 year, Aaron moved into residence there at St. Michaels College. He now attends the Toronto chapter of AEMMA, while studying Medieval History and Philosophy.

Igal Lelchuck, Scholler, AEMMA
Igal has been training at AEMMA since January 2005. He had successfully achieved his scholler rank in October 2007, demonstrating experience with abrazare, daga, spada and spada longa. Igal has also been training with sword & buckler.Russ Howe, Scholler, AEMMA
A lawyer by profession, Russ had joined AEMMA on January 5, 2005 and through training, had achieved the rank of scholler on March 19, 2006. Russ not only a deep interest in armoured combat, he has an interest in heraldry. Russ is skilled with longsword in armoured combat. Dr. Julian Siggers is currently the Vice-President, Content Communication, Governor's Office at the Royal Ontario Museum and member of the Friends of the Medieval Studies Society. Prior to this position, he was Head of Broadcast and Narrative Development at the Science Museum, London, UK. He received a BA (Hons) and MA in archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology, London University, and in 1997, a Ph.D. in prehistoric archaeology from the University of Toronto. Over the last five years he has taught undergraduate courses in archaeology at the University of Toronto, Trent University and the Universite Canadienne en France, in Nice.Sean Winslow, Recruit, AEMMA
Sean Winslow is a PhD student at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, specializing in manuscript studies. A native of California, he has studied in the U.S., Britain, and Canada, having earned a BA (cum laude) in History from the University of California and an MA in Medieval Studies, Book History, and Print Culture from the University of Toronto. In his free time, Sean is a fine art/documentary photographer and has been training with the Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts since October of 2006.

David M. Cvet, Provost & Founder, AEMMA
David has studied and practiced historical European medieval martial arts for 14 years, and has also studied and practiced Asian combat arts in his past. His background and experience having fired his desire to pursue a formal medieval martial arts training program, he founded AEMMA in mid-1998. David is also First Vice President of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada.![]()
Brian A. McIlmoyle, Provost & co-Founder, AEMMA
Brian began his study of fencing in his youth, Participating in historical recreation activities of the Medieval era. Mr. McIlmoyle learned to fence while in university practicing with the university fencing club where he focused on the saber. Finding modern fencing to be missing an air of combativeness, Brian refocused his practice to the study of medieval swordsmanship.![]()
David B. Murphy, Free Scholler & Director, AEMMA Guelph
David B. Murphy, holds the position of Director and Secretary of AEMMA, and he is also a Free Scholler and Instructor of the Guelph Chapter of AEMMA. He has had an interest in martial arts from an early age. He has received some instruction in Asian martial arts and has always been fascinated with historical weapons. He has also had a deep interest in history for many years. He earned his MA in history and is currently a high school history teacher.![]()
Kelly Rekuta, Free Scholler & Instructor, AEMMA
Kelly has been involved with medieval re-enactment through the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) for almost 20 years. Having been exposed to the work at AEMMA since 1998, he joined AEMMA and eventually earned the rank of Free Scholler and achieved the position of instructor. Kel is also a skilled leather craftsman, having created numerous hardened armoured defensive equipment for students at AEMMA.![]()
Aldo Valente, Scholler & Free Scholler Candidate, AEMMA
Aldo joined AEMMA on March 29th, 2004 and has trained regularly at AEMMA to the point of achieving the rank of scholler on May 29, 2005. He has been working, researching and training on achieving his rank of Free Scholler. Aldo also has numerous years of training as a boxer, which appears during his training and bouts in the form of excellent footwork and timing.

Dale Gienow, Founding President, International Jousting Association - Canada
Dale Gienow has been studying medieval marshal arts for most of his adult life and enjoys competing internationally. He is the founding president of the International Jousting Association - Canada, a member of the International Jousting League, the Mounted Archery Association of the Americas and more recently, the International Armored Combat League. Dale has also practised the ancient art of falconry for nearly twenty years. Together with his wife and son, he owns and directs the Muskoka Wildlife Centre in Gravenhurst, Ontario.![]()
Jeremy Oneail, co-Founder, Academy of Knightly Arts
Jeremy has been involved in medieval style combat since 1991. In 2001 he was cofounder of the Academy of Knightly Arts (AKA) located in Haverhill, Mass. (about 24 km north of Boston), USA. The AKA is dedicated to bringing late 14th century fighting techniques back to life. Jeremy has had the pleasure of competing in sword competitions around the world. In the past few years he has taken up jousting and has never been happier!![]()
Chris Penney, Scholler, OMSG
Chris Penney holds a Masters Degree in Medieval Archaeology from the University of York in England, and has had an interest in the middle ages for some time. A friend introduced him to AEMMA Ottawa in the fall of 2001, and he successfully challenged for the rank of Scholler in Toronto in September, 2002. As a Scholler in Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG, he developed the current Guild grappling and dagger program along with Scholler Nick Conway. Chris is working on other aspects of the OMSG training program, including the sword, in one and two hands, with other members of the Guild.![]()
Mathieu Ravignat, Scholler, OMSG
Mathieu Ravignat has been an avid martial artist all his life and has a variety of experience in the WMA, including Greco Roman Wrestling, Boxing, and Fencing. Having always had an interest in medieval history, Matt joined the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG in November 2001. In May 2002 he successfully played for the prize of Scholler at the AEMMA, and has developed the spear training program for the OMSG. He currently sits on the executive of the OMSG as secretary. Mathieu also holds an MA in philosophy.![]()
John Woods, Scholler, OMSG
John, after serving in the Canadian Armed Forces moved to Ottawa, where he discovered Western Martial Arts. In the fall of 2000, he met and began training with Anton Cvet. Since then, John helped to form the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG, and has also developed an interest in making fourteenth century armour, leading to the creation of the Woods Armoury. John has developed a poleaxe training program for the Guild, and currently devotes his time to mounted combat training.
