The salle d'armes, 927 Dupont St.
The Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts (AEMMA), established in 1998, the first of such training academies in Canada, is hosting the 3rd annual event at its training facilities located on the 2nd floor, at 927 Dupont St., near the intersection of Dupont and Ossington. Parking along Concorde or Dupont streets.

 
Sean Winslow, Scholler, AEMMA

Sean Winslow is a PhD student at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, specializing in manuscript studies. A native of California, he has studied in the U.S., Britain, and Canada, having earned a BA (cum laude) in History from the University of California and an MA in Medieval Studies, Book History, and Print Culture from the University of Toronto. In his free time, Sean is a fine art/documentary photographer and has been training with the Academy of European Medieval Martial Arts since October of 2006.

 

Aaron Bolarinho, scholler, AEMMA (Defendants)
click arms to view roll of arms entry Aaron started training with AEMMA 3 years ago in his senior year of High School. He attended Guelph chapter of AEMMA for his first two years while he lived in Kitchener, Ontario. Upon being accepted at the University of Toronto for the Fall 2007 year, Aaron moved into residence there at St. Michaels College. He now attends the Toronto chapter of AEMMA, while studying Medieval History and Philosophy. Aaron also successfully challenged for the rank of scholler on December 14, 2008.
Matt "Jack" Dreger, scholler, AEMMA (Appellants)
Matt is a Scholler and has been studying Western Martial Arts with AEMMA since 2006. He briefly studied Asian martial arts and is a competitive target shooter. He has a lifelong passion for history and literature, which he nurtured with a degree from UofT in Literary Studies, History and Philosophy. His career, however, took him towards IT, where he has been a programmer, web developer and writer for the last decade.

 

Lucas Brundle (squiring Matt Brundle)
click arms to view roll of arms entry Lucas Brundle is Matt Brundle's son and will be squiring for him. Lucas is an accomplished archer and has begun to study Medieval martial arts.

Miguel Cura (squiring Kel Rekuta)
click arms to view roll of arms entry Miguel has been training with AEMMA off and on since Aug 2002. He is an animator by trade, and periodically trains at AEMMA or FACT.

Michael L. Cvet (squiring David M. Cvet)
click arms to view roll of arms entry Michael is David's eldest son and is a graduate of UofT, is a lead software developer for Thoora developing a news aggregator engine, and has an interest in military history.

Terry DeCoste, scholler, AEMMA (squiring Aldo Valente)
Terry had joined AEMMA on September 2002 and through his training regimene, had achieved the rank of scholler on Nov 06, 2005.

Clovis Kari, scholler, AEMMA (squiring Brian McIlmoyle)
click to view entry in the AEMMA roll of arms Clovis has been training at AEMMA since he was sixteen, and on December 21, 2008 successfully challenged for the rank of scholler, being AEMMA's youngest scholler. Clovis is attending York University.

North Gienow (squiring Dale Gienow)
click to view entry in the AEMMA roll of arms North Gienow is Dale's son, and often accompanies his father to international tournaments. An excellent horseman, he is the the current youth, mounted martial games champion with the International Jousting Association - Canada and is a proficient mounted archer. North also practises modern fencing and has begun his study of practical medieval swordsmanship.

Annette Perry, recruit, AEMMA (squiring Matt McKee)
click arms to view roll of arms entry Annette has been with AEMMA since March of 2005. She was initially introduced to AEMMA through taking the ROM medieval swordsmanship class in the fall of 2004. Annette has been dedicated to training and has contributed greatly through volunteering for various events including March Breaks at the ROM.
Matthew Shea, recruit, AEMMA (squiring Russ Howe)
Matthew has been studying at AEMMA since June 2006, shortly after finishing his first year at York University, where he is studying professional writing with a specialization in institutional communications. Matthew has long had an interest in the castles, heraldry, arms and armour of medieval Europe.
Ralph Siferd, recruit, AEMMA (squiring Chris Penney)
click arms to view roll of arms entry Ralph has been training with AEMMA since August 2006. He trains on Sundays given he lives up north at Oro Station (north of Barrie). Ralph is also an accomplished artist (painter and leather working). He and his wife, Ruth, donated the four heralds tabards which are used for the AEMMA pas d'armes.
John Woods Jr., OMSG (squiring John Woods)
click arms to view roll of arms entry John has always had an interest in the history of weapons and warfare. He first began training with his father at a very young age learning archery and other combat skills. He now regularly trains with the OMSG and participates in their various public demonstrations.

 
Frank T. Williams, Free Scholler, AEMMA (Grand Marshal)
Frank holds the position of Director in the executive of AEMMA, and is also one of its instructors. Frank, due to his commitment, dedication and training successfully played for the prize of free scholler rank on April 17, 2005. Currently, Frank is the principal instructor for the "Introduction to Medieval Swordsmanship" course offered by the Royal Ontario Museum's ROMLife program.
Beau Brock, Scholler, AEMMA
click to view entry in the AEMMA roll of arms Beau hailing from Vancouver, and instructor at Academie Duello, is now attending the University of Toronto, working on his post doctoral degree focused on societal languages. During his studies in Toronto, the opportunity presented itself to leverage his skills and expertise in Italian rapier, and his passion for Ridolfo Capo Ferro manifested into a popular rapier class at AEMMA.
Ariella Elema, Scholler, AEMMA

Ariella has been training at AEMMA since 2005, successfully challenged for the rank of scholler on Nov 12, 2006 and continues to train with abrazare, daga, spada and spada longa.
Igal Lelchuk, Scholler, AEMMA
click to view entry in the AEMMA roll of arms  Igal has been training at AEMMA since January 2005. He had successfully achieved his scholler rank in October 2007, demonstrating experience with abrazare, daga, spada and spada longa. Igal has also been training with sword & buckler.
Gennadiy Shlayer, recruit, AEMMA
click arms to view roll of arms entry Gennadiy has been training with AEMMA since October 2004. Gennadiy's profession as a programmer in the IT sector has not dulled his interest in the medieval period, in particular, the fighting arts of the period.

Matt joined AEMMA on November 9, 2003 and has trained regularly at AEMMA and successfully achieved his scholler rank on April 2, 2006. He is a school teacher by profession and has a great interest in medieval history which he shares with his students.

David has studied and practiced historical European medieval martial arts for 14 years, and has also studied and practiced Asian combat arts in his past. His background and experience having fired his desire to pursue a formal medieval martial arts training program, he founded AEMMA in mid-1998. David is also the 23rd President of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada.

Brian began his study of fencing in his youth, Participating in historical recreation activities of the Medieval era. Mr. McIlmoyle learned to fence while in university practicing with the university fencing club where he focused on the saber. Finding modern fencing to be missing an air of combativeness, Brian refocused his practice to the study of medieval swordsmanship.

Kelly has been involved with medieval re-enactment through the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) for almost 30 years. Having been exposed to the work at AEMMA since 1998, he joined AEMMA and eventually earned the rank of Free Scholler and achieved the position of instructor. Kel is also a skilled leather craftsman, having created numerous hardened armoured defensive equipment for students at AEMMA.

Aldo joined AEMMA on March 29th, 2004 and has trained regularly at AEMMA to the point of achieving the rank of scholler on May 29, 2005 and more recently, successfully achieved the rank of free scholler on March 1, 2009. He has been working, researching and training on achieving his rank of Free Scholler. Aldo also has numerous years of training as a boxer, which appears during his training and bouts in the form of excellent footwork and timing.

From Bracebridge, Ontario, Dale Gienow is the founding president of the International Jousting Association - Canada, a member of the International Jousting League, a founding member of the Mounted Archery Association of the Americas and an instructor for AEMMA's mounted training program. He has competed in international tournaments, for many years, both on foot and on horse. Together with his wife and son, Dale co-owns and operates the Muskoka Wildlife Centre and Chivalric Productions, a medieval education company.

A lawyer by profession, Russ had joined AEMMA on January 5, 2005 and through training, had achieved the rank of scholler on March 19, 2006. Russ not only a deep interest in armoured combat, he has an interest in heraldry. This will be Russ's first time in an armoured event and therefore is placed as an "appellant", and will be assigned only a couple of bouts in order to "get his feet wet" with armoured combat. Russ is a member of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada.

Since childhood, Matthew has had an intense fascination with ancient history, especially that of medieval Europe. This deep-seeded passion along with a life spent dabbling in a variety of maritial arts led him to the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild. He joined in August of 2006 and successfully played for the prize of Scholler in September of 2007. He studies medieval armouring and has hand-crafted the majority of his harness. Matthew now actively participates in much of OMSG's public events and retires to his farm where he keeps his aspiring warhorses.

Chris Penney holds a Masters Degree in Medieval Archaeology from the University of York in England, and has had an interest in the middle ages for some time. A friend introduced him to AEMMA Ottawa in the fall of 2001, and he successfully challenged for the rank of Scholler in Toronto in September, 2002. As a Scholler in Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG, he developed the current Guild grappling and dagger program along with Scholler Nick Conway. Chris is working on other aspects of the OMSG training program, including the sword, in one and two hands, with other members of the Guild. Chris successfully challenged for the rank of Free Scholler on Monday, August 3, 2009 at the OMSG camping weekend.

John, after serving in the Canadian Armed Forces moved to Ottawa, where he discovered Western Martial Arts. In the fall of 2000, he met and began training with Anton Cvet. Since then, John helped to form the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG, and has also developed an interest in making fourteenth century armour, leading to the creation of the Woods Armoury. John has developed a poleaxe training program for the Guild, and currently devotes his time to mounted combat training.

Ross has been a member of the Academy since October 2004 and had successfully achieved his scholler rank in October of 2005. Ross is also a videographer and talented musician, and has his own production company named "Independence Films". He had created a number of DVDs of AEMMA's various events and past pas d'armes.
  Peter Yu "Chronos", AEMMA
Peter has been involved with AEMMA since 2000, both as a student and as a videographer, chronicalling various AEMMA events over the years. He will be working with Ross Goodfellow on recording the event.
