The Venue

Royal Ontario Museum, ROM
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) was formally created by the signing of the ROM Act in the Ontario Legislature on April 16, 1912. When the Duke of Connaught, then Governor-General of Canada, opened the new building to the public at 3:00 pm on March 19, 1914, it instantly became an object of pride for Toronto. The museum has grown it collections to almost six million artifacts, and welcomes between 750,000 to a million visitors annually.
The location of the tournament within the ROM will be in the Currelly Gallery, main floor.

Robbie Sprules is a founding partner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Taylor|Sprules Corporation. He has over 28 years experience in: regional, national and international product brand development; product brand architecture; intellectual property creation and management; total corporate brand development, integration and application; product, service and corporate name creation, registration and asset development; complete strategic linked-brand program development; industrial design and applied research; strategic marketing counsel. Mr. Sprules holds the British titles Lord of Wrentnall and Lord of Great Lyth, hereditary Lordships in the western shires of England. He is an Officer of the Honourable Guard, 78th Fraser Highlanders, York Garrison, and a Director of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada. The Heralds

Dr. Robert Mason, Dept of World Cultures, ROM (Defendants)

Dr. Robert Mason is an archaeologist in the Royal Ontario Museum's (ROM) Near Eastern and Asian Civilizations collection and is co-founder of the Friends of the Medieval Studies Society of the ROM. Robert's research interests cover ancient technology, trade and industry from the beginnings of time to the industrial revolution. Although his research covers the globe, his current field work is in Syria, where he studies high-technology pottery and castles of the mediaeval period. He received a doctorate in archaeological science from the University of Oxford, and a B.A in anthropology and geology from the University of Toronto. Robert is also cross-appointed to the University of Toronto.

David Birtwistle, Esq. KCTJ (Appellants)
David has been a social worker since 1970 and has been on the faculty at Centennial College for the past several years. He has served in the RCAF in the 1960s and in the CAF this past decade. He is a director and a long time member of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada, the English Heraldry Society and the Heraldry Society of Scotland. David has practiced both Karate and Kendo in the past and continues to have an interest in modern and mediaeval military and social history, arms and armour. He is a Knight Templar and Captain of the Honourable Guard and Field Units of the 78th Fraser Highlanders, York Garrison having served in the regiment for over eleven years where he has taught foot and weapons drill. The Pursuivants

Aaron Bolarinho, scholler, AEMMA (Defendants)
Aaron started training with AEMMA 3 years ago in his senior year of High School. He attended Guelph chapter of AEMMA for his first two years while he lived in Kitchener, Ontario. Upon being accepted at the University of Toronto for the Fall 2007 year, Aaron moved into residence there at St. Michaels College. He now attends the Toronto chapter of AEMMA, while studying Medieval History and Philosophy. Aaron also successfully challenged for the rank of scholler on December 14, 2008.
Matt "Jack" Dreger, scholler, AEMMA (Appellants)
Matt is a Scholler and has been studying Western Martial Arts with AEMMA for two years. He briefly studied Asian martial arts and is a competitive target shooter. He has a lifelong passion for history and literature, which he nurtured with a degree from UofT in Literary Studies, History and Philosophy. His career, however, took him towards IT, where he has been a programmer, web developer and writer for the last decade.

Larry Brydon, scholler, AEMMA (squiring David M. Cvet)
Larry has been training at AEMMA since late 2003, and on March 6, 2005 successfully challenged for the rank of scholler.

Terry DeCoste, scholler, AEMMA (squiring Aldo Valente)
Terry had joined AEMMA on September 2002 and through his training regimene, had achieved the rank of scholler on Nov 06, 2005.

Russ Howe, scholler, AEMMA (squiring Brian McIlmoyle)
A lawyer by profession, Russ had joined AEMMA on January 5, 2005 and through training, had achieved the rank of scholler on March 19, 2006. Russ not only a deep interest in armoured combat, he has an interest in heraldry. Russ is skilled with longsword in armoured combat. Russ is a member of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada.

Clovis Kari, scholler, AEMMA (squiring Matt Brundle)
Clovis has been training at AEMMA since he was sixteen, and on December 21, 2008 successfully challenged for the rank of scholler, being AEMMA's youngest scholler. Clovis is attending York University.

Matthew Shea, recruit, AEMMA (squiring Kel Rekuta)
Matthew has been studying at AEMMA since June 2006, shortly after finishing his first year at York University, where he is studying professional writing with a specialization in institutional communications. Matthew has long had an interest in the castles, heraldry, arms and armour of medieval Europe.

North is Dale's son, and works with him at the Muskoka Wildlife Centre.

Leslie Lemar, scholler AEMMA/OMSG (squiring Matt McKee)
Leslie has been training with OMSG since late 2001, and on February 09, 2003, she successfully challenged for the rank of scholler, being AEMMA's first female scholler.

Dan Sellars, OMSG (squiring Mathieu Ravignat)
Dan Sellars joined OMSG in September 2007, in January 2009 he successfully achieved the rank of Scholler.
Anton J. Cvet, free scholler, OMSG (squiring John Woods)
Anton J. Cvet is the President and Founder of the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild, OMSG. With a history of practicing other martial arts, Anton became interested in Western martial arts in 1999. In the Spring, 2005, Anton was awarded the rank of Free Scholler postmortimously to the date of his third tournament attendance at WMA 2002 Chicago, thus again, attaining the rank through a show of arms coupled with recognition of his efforts and achievements to WMA in Ottawa and Europe.

 

The Marshals

Frank T. Williams, Free Scholler, AEMMA (Grand Marshal)
Frank holds the position of Director in the executive of AEMMA, and is also one of the instructors. Frank, due to his commitment, dedication and training successfully played for the prize of free scholler rank on April 17, 2005. Currently, Frank is the principal instructor for the "Introduction to Medieval Swordsmanship" course offered by the Royal Ontario Museum's ROMLife program.
Beau Brock, Scholler, AEMMA
Beau hailing from Vancouver, and instructor at Academie Duello, is now attending the University of Toronto, working on his post doctoral degree focused on societal languages. During his studies in Toronto, the opportunity presented itself to leverage his skills and expertise in Italian rapier, and his passion for Ridolfo Capo Ferro manifested into a popular rapier class at AEMMA.
Ariella Elema, Scholler, AEMMA
  Ariella, Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto is working on her thesis research on trial by combat. Ariella has been training at AEMMA since 2005, successfully challenged for the rank of scholler on Nov 12, 2006 and continues to train with abrazare, daga, spada and spada longa.
Igal Lelchuk, Scholler, AEMMA
  Igal has been training at AEMMA since January 2005. He had successfully achieved his scholler rank in October 2007, demonstrating experience with abrazare, daga, spada and spada longa. Igal has also been training with sword & buckler.

The Defendants

  Matt Brundle, Scholler, AEMMA
Matt joined AEMMA on November 9, 2003 and has trained regularly at AEMMA and successfully achieved his scholler rank on April 2, 2006. He is a school teacher by profession and has a great interest in medieval history which he shares with his students.
  David M. Cvet, Provost & Founder, AEMMA
David has studied and practiced historical European medieval martial arts for 14 years, and has also studied and practiced Asian combat arts in his past. His background and experience having fired his desire to pursue a formal medieval martial arts training program, he founded AEMMA in mid-1998. David is also the 23rd President of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada.
  Brian A. McIlmoyle, Provost & co-Founder, AEMMA
Brian began his study of fencing in his youth, Participating in historical recreation activities of the Medieval era. Mr. McIlmoyle learned to fence while in university practicing with the university fencing club where he focused on the saber. Finding modern fencing to be missing an air of combativeness, Brian refocused his practice to the study of medieval swordsmanship.
  Kelly Rekuta, Free Scholler & Instructor, AEMMA
Kelly has been involved with medieval re-enactment through the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) for almost 20 years. Having been exposed to the work at AEMMA since 1998, he joined AEMMA and eventually earned the rank of Free Scholler and achieved the position of instructor. Kel is also a skilled leather craftsman, having created numerous hardened armoured defensive equipment for students at AEMMA.
  Aldo Valente, Free Scholler & Instructor, AEMMA
Aldo joined AEMMA on March 29th, 2004 and has trained regularly at AEMMA to the point of achieving the rank of scholler on May 29, 2005 and more recently, successfully achieved the rank of free scholler on March 1, 2009. He has been working, researching and training on achieving his rank of Free Scholler. Aldo also has numerous years of training as a boxer, which appears during his training and bouts in the form of excellent footwork and timing.

 

The Appellants

  Nikki Fourtzialas-Oneail, Co-Founder Academy of Knightly Arts
Nikki began her fighting career in the SCA in 1995 and later became six time member of the Unbelted Champions team. She studied German and Italian martial arts with various groups and attended a number of WMA conventions. Nikki also competed in her first International Steel competition in May 2004 in Belgian, and finished 2nd to her husband Jeremy Oneail. Professionally, she is VP of Business Systems Integration at a medium sized financial services company outside of Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
  Dale Gienow, Founding President, International Jousting Association - Canada
Dale Gienow has been studying medieval martial arts for most of his adult life and enjoys competing internationally. He is the founding president of the International Jousting Association - Canada, a member of the International Jousting League, the Mounted Archery Association of the Americas and more recently, the International Armored Combat League. Dale has also practised the ancient art of falconry for nearly twenty years. Together with his wife and son, he owns and directs the Muskoka Wildlife Centre in Gravenhurst, Ontario.
  Matt McKee, Scholler, OMSG
Since childhood, Matthew has had an intense fascination with ancient history, especially that of medieval Europe. This deep-seeded passion along with a life spent dabbling in a variety of maritial arts led him to the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild. He joined in August of 2006 and successfully played for the prize of Scholler in September of 2007. He studies medieval armouring and has hand-crafted the majority of his harness. Matthew now actively participates in much of OMSG's public events and retires to his farm where he keeps his aspiring warhorses.
  Jeremy Oneail, co-Founder, Academy of Knightly Arts
Jeremy has been involved in medieval style combat since 1991. In 2001 he was cofounder of the Academy of Knightly Arts (AKA) located in Haverhill, Mass. (about 24 km north of Boston), USA. The AKA is dedicated to bringing late 14th century fighting techniques back to life. Jeremy has had the pleasure of competing in sword competitions around the world. In the past few years he has taken up jousting and has never been happier!
  Mathieu Ravignat, Scholler, OMSG
Mathieu Ravignat has been an avid martial artist all his life and has a variety of experience in the WMA, including Greco Roman Wrestling, Boxing, and Fencing. Having always had an interest in medieval history, Matt joined the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG in November 2001. In May 2002 he successfully played for the prize of Scholler at the AEMMA, and has developed the spear training program for the OMSG. He currently sits on the executive of the OMSG as Herald. Mathieu also holds an MA in philosophy and is a member of the Royal Heraldy Society of Canada and is a Knight Templar. (link: www.knightstemplar.ca).
  John Woods, Scholler, OMSG
John, after serving in the Canadian Armed Forces moved to Ottawa, where he discovered Western Martial Arts. In the fall of 2000, he met and began training with Anton Cvet. Since then, John helped to form the Ottawa Medieval Sword Guild or OMSG, and has also developed an interest in making fourteenth century armour, leading to the creation of the Woods Armoury. John has developed a poleaxe training program for the Guild, and currently devotes his time to mounted combat training.
