The toad Or is said to have been the charge of King Clovis I, who ruled the Franks from 481 to 511 CE. According to French lore, this toad would become the Fleur-de-lis, the symbol of France's monarchy and a common heraldic device. The Vert represents the young age at which Clovis was accepted into the Academy as a scholler.
